Target intelligence / Profile preview

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)

Target
GABA
Molecular classification
Amino acid, Neurotransmitter
01

Overview

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. It plays a critical role in reducing neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. GABA mediates neuronal inhibition by binding to postsynaptic GABA receptors, leading to the influx of chloride ions into the neuron, hyperpolarizing the membrane, and reducing the likelihood of an action potential.
