Gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor alpha-2 subunit (GABRA2)

Target
GABRA2
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor, GABA-A receptor subunit
01

Overview

The gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor alpha-2 subunit (GABRA2) is a protein encoded by the GABRA2 gene in humans. It forms part of the GABA-A receptor, which is a ligand-gated chloride channel activated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain. The GABA-A receptors are pentameric complexes typically composed of two alpha, two beta, and one gamma subunit; GABRA2 represents one of six possible alpha subunits. Activation by GABA leads to hyperpolarization of neuronal membranes, inhibiting neuronal firing. GABRA2 plays key roles in emotional regulation and behavioral control and has been linked to conditions such as alcoholism, anxiety disorders, and epilepsy.
