Gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor alpha-5 (GABRA5) is a protein subunit that forms part of the GABA_A receptor, a ligand-gated chloride channel responsible for mediating inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. α5-containing GABA_A receptors are predominantly expressed in specific brain regions such as the hippocampus and play key roles in synaptic plasticity, learning and memory processes, and tonic inhibition. Modulation of these receptors affects learning/memory, and inverse agonists may be useful for treatment of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.
Inverse agonists increase activity at GABA binding site which in turn increases Cl- influx.
