Gamma-aminobutyric Acid Receptor (Invertebrate) (iGABAR)

Target
iGABAR
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Ionotropic receptor
01

Overview

The gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor in invertebrates is a ligand-gated ion channel that mediates the effects of the neurotransmitter GABA. It is a pentameric transmembrane protein, primarily permeable to chloride ions, and responsible for inhibitory neurotransmission. Invertebrate GABA receptors exhibit significant sequence and pharmacological diversity compared to their vertebrate counterparts. They are important targets for insecticides and represent valuable models for evolutionary neurobiology.
