A gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor agonist is a compound that activates GABA receptors, mimicking the effect of the endogenous neurotransmitter GABA. These agonists typically produce sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant effects by enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. GABA receptors are the targets; agonists of these targets induce hyperpolarization and reduce neuron firing. While several subtypes exist (GABAA, GABAB, GABAρ), the result is inhibitory in nature.
