The gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor subunit beta is a component of the GABA type A (GABAA) receptor, which is a multisubunit ligand-gated chloride channel. The GABAA receptor mediates the fastest inhibitory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system and plays a crucial role in regulating neuronal excitability. When activated by GABA, the GABAA receptor opens to allow chloride ions to flow into the neuron, hyperpolarizing the membrane and reducing neuronal excitability. Several isoforms exist (beta1, beta2, beta3) and are targets for drugs like benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and neurosteroids. Dysfunction can lead to neurological disorders such as epilepsy or anxiety.
