Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit delta (GABRD)

Target
GABRD
Molecular classification
Receptor, Ion channel, Ligand-gated ion channel
01

Overview

The gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit delta (GABRD) is a protein that forms part of the heteropentameric GABA_A receptors, which are ligand-gated chloride channels activated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Delta-containing GABA_A receptors mediate tonic inhibition, regulating neuronal excitability. They exhibit distinct pharmacology compared to synaptically localized receptors, showing high sensitivity to neurosteroids and ethanol, and low efficacy for direct activation by GABA. Mutations in GABRD have been associated with generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures type 5.
