Overview

Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit rho-2 (GABRR2) is a component of ligand-gated chloride channels known as GABA(A) receptors, specifically the rho subfamily, sometimes referred to as GABA(C) receptors[1][3][4]. These pentameric ion channels mediate inhibitory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system by allowing chloride influx in response to GABA, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Rho-2 is particularly implicated in retinal neurotransmission, glial development in the cerebellum, and tonic inhibitory signaling in neural circuits. Genetic variations in GABRR2 have been associated with susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders, epilepsy, and alcohol dependence. While GABRR2 is not as widely targeted by commonly used clinical drugs as other GABA(A) subunits (e.g., those containing alpha or gamma subunits), it represents a potential therapeutic target for modulation of specific inhibitory pathways, especially in the visual system[1][3][5].
