The gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter system in the central nervous system (CNS). It plays a crucial role in reducing neuronal excitability and maintaining the balance between excitation and inhibition within neural circuits. GABAergic neurons are widely distributed throughout key brain regions and are involved in modulating behavior, motor control, mood regulation, and sleep-wake cycles.
