Gamma aminobutyric acid transaminase (GABA-T) is a pyridoxal 5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of GABA, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. It converts GABA and 2-oxoglutarate into succinic semialdehyde and L-glutamate. GABA-T is a validated target for antiepileptic drugs such as vigabatrin, which inhibits the enzyme to increase GABA levels in the brain. Deficiency of GABA-T due to mutations in the ABAT gene results in a severe neurological disorder.
