Gamma-aminobutyric acid transporter 1 (GAT1) is a membrane protein responsible for the reuptake of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) from the synaptic cleft into presynaptic neurons and astrocytes. It plays a critical role in regulating extracellular GABA levels, thereby controlling neuronal excitability and preventing excessive neuronal firing. Mutations or dysfunctions in GAT1 have been implicated in neurological disorders such as epilepsy.
