Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Transporter 4 (GAT4)

Target
GAT4
Molecular classification
Transporter, Neurotransmitter:sodium symporter family
01

Overview

Gamma-aminobutyric acid transporter 4 (GAT4) is a member of the neurotransmitter:sodium symporter family, responsible for the reuptake of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It is primarily studied in rodents, and while there isn't a direct human ortholog named 'GAT4', BGT1/SLC6A12 may serve a similar function. GAT4 plays a crucial role in regulating extracellular GABA concentrations and thus modulates synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability. It differs from other GATs in its neuronal-specific localization and substrate specificity, including β-alanine. Disruption can lead to imbalances in neural inhibition, potentially contributing to neurological disorders.
