Target intelligence / Profile preview

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Transporter Type 1 (GAT1)

Target
GAT1
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute Carrier Family 6 (SLC6), Neurotransmitter:Sodium Symporter
01

Overview

GABA transporter type 1 (GAT1) is a membrane protein responsible for the reuptake of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. It plays a crucial role in terminating synaptic transmission and maintaining extracellular GABA homeostasis. GAT1 is predominantly expressed in neurons, especially within presynaptic terminals, but also in certain glial cells. Inhibitors of GAT1 are used therapeutically for epilepsy management. Mutations or dysregulation are implicated in neurological disorders including epilepsy.
