Gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor alpha 2 subunit (GABRA2)

Target
GABRA2
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

The gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor alpha 2 subunit (GABRA2) is a protein that forms part of the GABA-A receptor, a ligand-gated chloride channel activated by GABA, the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Alpha-2 containing GABA-A receptors play key roles in emotional regulation, behavioral control, and mediation of anxiolytic effects. Alterations or mutations in GABRA2 have been linked to alcoholism, anxiety disorders, depression, drug dependence, and schizophrenia.
