Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Type A Receptor Alpha1 Subunit (GABRA1)

Target
GABRA1
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Cys-loop superfamily, Receptor
01

Overview

The gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor alpha1 subunit (GABRA1) is a protein subunit of the GABA_A receptor, a ligand-gated chloride channel responsible for mediating fast synaptic inhibition in the central nervous system. It is a key target for benzodiazepines and Z-drugs, which enhance GABAergic neurotransmission and produce sedative, anxiolytic, and muscle-relaxant effects. Mutations or dysfunctions in GABRA1 are associated with neurological disorders, particularly epilepsy syndromes.

Mechanism of action

Allosteric modulation of GABA_A receptor chloride conductance; increased frequency of channel opening (benzodiazepines) or selective agonism at alpha1 subunit-containing GABA_A receptors (Z-drugs)
