Gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor alpha2 subunit (GABRA2) is a protein subunit of the GABA-A receptor, a ligand-gated chloride channel. Activation by GABA leads to chloride influx, hyperpolarization, and reduced neuronal excitability. GABRA2 contributes to the receptor's pharmacological properties, including benzodiazepine binding affinity and is implicated in various neuropsychiatric disorders like anxiety, depression, alcoholism, and schizophrenia.
