The gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor rho1 subunit (GABRR1) is a protein that forms part of the GABA_A-ρ receptors. These receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that mediate inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system by allowing chloride ions to flow into neurons upon activation by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The rho-subtype exhibits unique pharmacological properties, including generating non-desensitizing Cl⁻ currents and relative insensitivity to classic antagonists like bicuculline. Highest expression levels are found in the retina, where they play critical roles in visual processing, but they also contribute to inhibitory signaling within the CNS. Its unique pharmacology makes it a target for research into vision science and potential therapeutic interventions for neurological disorders involving altered inhibition.
