01

Overview

Gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor subunit alpha-3 (GABRA3) is a protein that forms part of the GABA\(_{A}\) receptor, a heteropentameric ligand-gated chloride channel. This receptor is activated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain. Upon GABA binding, the channel opens to allow chloride ions to flow into neurons, leading to hyperpolarization and inhibition of neuronal activity. GABRA3-containing receptors are implicated in various physiological processes including modulation of anxiety, sleep regulation, muscle relaxation, and seizure susceptibility due to their inhibitory action on neuronal firing. Alterations or dysregulation involving GABRA3 have been associated with autism spectrum disorder and hepatocellular carcinoma.
