Overview

The gamma-aminobutyric acid type A-rho receptor (GABAA-ρ) is a member of the GABA_A receptor family, mediating inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. GABAA-ρ receptors are distinguished by their unique ρ subunits and distinct pharmacological properties compared to classical GABA_A receptors. They form functional receptors through the oligomerization of five ρ subunits, creating a chloride ion-conducting pore. These receptors are primarily found in retinal neurons, where they contribute to visual signal processing, but are also present at lower levels in other brain regions. They are activated by GABA and exhibit distinct pharmacology, being insensitive to benzodiazepines and barbiturates but selectively modulated by certain neuroactive steroids.
