Gamma Aminobutyric Acid Type C Receptor (GABAC receptor)

Target
GABAC receptor
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Ionotropic receptor, Receptor
01

Overview

The GABAC receptor is a member of the ligand-gated ion channel superfamily and is primarily known as a chloride-permeable ionotropic gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor. It is distinct from the more widely distributed GABAA and metabotropic GABAB receptors, both in structure and pharmacology. The functional GABAC receptor is typically a pentamer composed mainly of rho (ρ) subunits: ρ1, ρ2, and ρ3. It mediates inhibitory neurotransmission via chloride influx leading to hyperpolarization of neurons. It plays unique roles in retinal circuitry through mechanisms such as slow activation kinetics, segregation from other inhibitory receptors, and participation in multi-neuronal pathways.
