Overview

Gamma camera-detectable radionuclide tracers are a class of diagnostic agents (radiopharmaceuticals) labeled with radioactive isotopes that emit gamma rays. After administration (by injection, inhalation, or ingestion), these tracers localize to particular organs, tissues, or lesions based on their chemical structure and biological properties. The emitted gamma radiation is detected by a gamma camera to generate images for diagnosing or monitoring a variety of conditions, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, infection, and inflammation. Each tracer is specific to a physiological process or tissue type (e.g., technetium-99m for bone scans, thallium-201 for cardiac scans). The term is not specific to one molecule or target, but refers to any agent compatible with gamma camera imaging.
