Gamma-crystallin C is a member of the beta/gamma-crystallin family of highly stable, water-soluble structural proteins that constitute the major components of the vertebrate eye lens[1][3][7][8]. The primary function of gamma-crystallin C is to maintain lens transparency and its high refractive index, critical for vision[1][2][3][8]. These proteins are monomeric and highly symmetrical, forming dense, orderly arrangements within lens fiber cells, which lack nuclei and other organelles. Mutations in the CRYGC gene can disrupt protein stability and solubility, leading to various forms of cataract, especially in early-onset and familial cases. Gamma-crystallin C is not considered a druggable target in conventional therapeutic development, as its role is purely structural rather than catalytic or signaling[1][3][6][8].
