Gamma-crystallin N (CRYGN) is a member of the crystallin protein family and is one of the main structural proteins found in the vertebrate eye lens, where it plays a key role in preserving transparency and maintaining the refractive index. CRYGN displays both beta and gamma crystallin protein motifs, which is unique among crystallins. Its expression is tightly regulated after early development and genetic or age-related changes in CRYGN are implicated in the formation of cataracts due to protein degradation or mutation. CRYGN is considered a structural, rather than therapeutic, target and is not classified as an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or drug target, but is essential for the physical structure and function of the eye lens[1][2][3][5].
