Gamma Emission Detection

Overview

Gamma emission detection refers to the identification and measurement of gamma rays, which are high-energy photons emitted from atomic nuclei during radioactive decay or nuclear reactions. Gamma rays are highly penetrating electromagnetic radiation and require specialized detectors for their observation and quantification. In medical imaging (e.g., SPECT), radiopharmaceuticals labeled with gamma-emitting isotopes are administered, and their distribution is tracked via the emitted gamma rays. The core principle of gamma emission detection involves converting incoming neutral gamma photons into detectable electrical signals through photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, or pair production. Detector types include scintillation detectors (e.g., NaI(Tl), CsI, BGO) and semiconductor detectors (e.g., HPGe).
