Overview

The gamma globin gene (HBG1/HBG2) encodes the gamma subunits of fetal hemoglobin (HbF). HbF is the predominant hemoglobin in fetuses and newborns, playing a key role in oxygen transport. Reactivation or upregulation of gamma globin expression is a therapeutic strategy for treating sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia.
