Overview

Gamma-glutamyltransferase light chain 5 pseudogene (GGTLC5P) is a human pseudogene, meaning it is a DNA sequence that closely resembles a gene but does not encode a functional protein. It shares significant sequence similarity (homology) only to the light chain portion of the gamma-glutamyltransferase gene family; however, the absence of coding potential makes it non-functional. It is not considered to have biological activity nor is it implicated in disease, therapeutic targeting, or biomarker applications. Importantly, such pseudogenes can be confused with functional family members (e.g., GGT5), which are enzymes involved in glutathione metabolism, but GGTLC5P is not functionally equivalent and should not be relied upon for biological or pharmacological interpretation. There may be confusion between this pseudogene (GGTLC5P/ENSG00000284679) and the active enzyme Gamma-glutamyltransferase 5 (GGT5), which is encoded by a different gene (ENSG00000099998) and is a protein-coding gene with established biological and disease roles. Ensure that queries for therapeutic targets within the gamma-glutamyltransferase family reference active members (such as GGT1, GGT5), not pseudogenes. Gamma-glutamyltransferase light chain 5 pseudogene is not a drug target, does not encode a protein, and does not have therapeutic relevance or established disease association. It is solely a pseudogene with sequence similarity within the gamma-glutamyltransferase family.
