Overview

The gamma motor neuron efferent pathway is a specialized neural pathway responsible for regulating the sensitivity of muscle spindles. It involves gamma motor neurons located in the anterior horn of the spinal cord, which innervate intrafusal muscle fibers within muscle spindles. By adjusting the tension of these fibers, the pathway modulates proprioceptive feedback, reflex gain, and muscle tone. Alpha-gamma coactivation ensures accurate feedback during voluntary movements. Dysfunction can contribute to abnormal muscle tone and impaired proprioception.
