Overview

Gamma-ray emission sources are physical objects—generally sealed radioactive materials—that emit gamma rays, a form of high-energy ionizing electromagnetic radiation. In medical imaging (e.g., nuclear medicine, gamma cameras, PET, SPECT), these sources most commonly include technetium-99m, iodine-131, and fluorine-18, among others. The emitted gamma rays are detected externally to create images of the distribution of the radiotracer within the body, providing diagnostic information. Gamma-ray sources are not biological molecules, receptors, or drug targets but are essential tools for non-invasive functional imaging of biological processes[2][5][8]. Special safety precautions are required due to the deep-penetrating and hazardous nature of gamma radiation exposure[2][3][6].
