Ganciclovir Kinase

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine/threonine protein kinase
01

Overview

Ganciclovir kinase refers to viral or cellular kinases that phosphorylate the antiviral drug ganciclovir, converting it from a prodrug into its active form. The most clinically relevant ganciclovir kinase is the UL97 protein encoded by human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), which is a serine/threonine kinase responsible for the initial phosphorylation of ganciclovir. In herpes simplex virus (HSV), thymidine kinase (TK) performs this function. Mutations in these kinases can lead to ganciclovir resistance.
