Overview

Ganglioside antigens are a class of complex glycolipids, specifically glycosphingolipids containing one or more sialic acid residues, that are predominantly found in the plasma membranes of cells within the nervous system. They play critical roles in cellular growth and differentiation, modulation of signal transduction, immune responses, and serve as cell surface antigens or receptors for various molecules including bacterial toxins. Certain gangliosides are overexpressed on tumor cells, making them attractive targets for cancer immunotherapy.
