Ganglioside GM1 is a complex glycosphingolipid composed of a ceramide backbone linked to a branched pentasaccharide containing sialic acid, galactose, N-acetylgalactosamine, and glucose residues. It is a major structural and functional component of neuronal plasma membranes, playing critical roles in cell recognition, signaling, and neuroprotection. It functions as a high-affinity receptor for cholera toxin and similar bacterial toxins, mediates neuronal survival and differentiation, and is implicated in inherited and acquired neurological disorders. GM1 is widely studied for its therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative disease and neuronal repair and as a biomarker and drug target in neurology and infectious disease.
Acts as a binding receptor for cholera toxin and similar toxins, facilitating their entry and ADP-ribosylation mechanism. Modulates neuronal survival and regeneration through effects on neurotrophins and plasticity. Regulates membrane signaling by organizing protein complexes within lipid rafts. As a drug: Promotes neurorepair and inhibits neuronal apoptosis.
