Pseudogenes are DNA segments similar in sequence to a known gene but typically lack protein-coding function, often due to mutations or truncations. The functional gap junction protein alpha 1 (GJA1, connexin 43) plays an essential role in forming gap junctions for cell-to-cell communication, especially in heart tissue and embryonic development[1][2][3][4][5]. GJA1P1, mapped to chromosome 5, does not produce functional protein and is not relevant as a therapeutic target.
