Overview

Gap junction protein alpha-10 (connexin 62, GJA10) is a member of the connexin family that forms gap junction channels mediating direct intercellular communication. These channels allow small molecules, ions, and second messengers to pass between adjacent cells. In humans, GJA10 is notably expressed in specific retinal neurons—functionally analogous to mouse horizontal cells—where it contributes to the formation of gap junction plaques important for electrical and signal synchronization. In platelets, Cx62 is involved in aggregation, granule secretion, and clot retraction, and its inhibition reduces platelet activation and thrombosis independently of other connexins. GJA10 expression has also been detected in skeletal muscle and (modestly) in the heart. Elevated expression of GJA10 has been statistically linked to poorer survival in gastric cancer, positioning it as a putative prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target. Overall, while generally classified within ion channels and not widely targeted by existing drugs, connexin-62 is emerging in research as a functionally and clinically relevant gap junction protein[1][2].
