Overview

Gap junction protein alpha 9 (GJA9) is a putative member of the connexin family, which comprises the structural subunits of gap junction channels. Gap junction channels are intercellular conduits formed by the alignment of two hemichannels (connexons), each composed of six connexin proteins. These channels facilitate direct exchange of ions, metabolites, and signaling molecules up to ~1 kDa in mass between adjacent cells, supporting electrical and metabolic coupling, tissue homeostasis, and synchronization of cellular activity[1][2][4]. Although gap junctions and connexins are fundamental for physiological processes in the nervous system, heart, skin, and other tissues[3][4], GJA9 is not well-characterized as an independent gene or protein in humans and its function, if any distinct from other connexins (e.g., GJA10, Connexin-59), is poorly described in current authoritative sources[2][4]. Some aliases of GJA9 overlap with GJA10 and may be a result of misannotation or confusion in the literature.
