Overview

GAPDH antisense RNA 1 (GAPDH-AS1) is a non-coding RNA transcribed from the strand opposite the GAPDH gene. It belongs to the class of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), which are emerging as important regulators of gene expression and cellular function. Like other antisense lncRNAs, GAPDH-AS1 may modulate the expression or function of its sense gene (GAPDH) or participate in chromatin and RNA-level regulatory phenomena, but robust mechanistic or functional data for GAPDH-AS1 are currently lacking[5]. While the GAPDH protein is well studied and broadly implicated in cellular metabolism and gene regulation, GAPDH-AS1 itself is not widely described as a direct therapeutic target, biomarker, or drug-interacting molecule. Its main scientific interest is as a putative regulatory non-coding RNA in human cells[5].
