The gas–liquid interface of gastrointestinal gas bubbles is a physical target located within the lumen of the stomach and intestines. In conditions such as functional dyspepsia or general flatulence, gas is often trapped in a tenacious, mucus-stabilized foam consisting of numerous small bubbles (StatPearls, 2023). These small bubbles have a high surface-to-volume ratio and are difficult for the body to expel, leading to abdominal distension and discomfort. Therapeutic intervention at this interface involves the use of surfactants like simethicone, which decrease the surface tension of the liquid film surrounding the gas (PubChem). By altering the physical properties of the interface, these agents cause the small bubbles to coalesce into larger ones that can be more easily eliminated through belching or passing flatus. This mechanism is purely local and does not involve systemic absorption or interaction with biological receptors, making it a distinct class of therapeutic target (NIH, 2022).
