Overview

Gas–liquid interfaces and gastrointestinal luminal gas bubbles represent a physical therapeutic target located within the lumen of the stomach and intestines. These bubbles are formed through the ingestion of air, intraluminal chemical reactions, and the metabolic activity of gut microbiota (StatPearls, 2023). When gas becomes trapped in a viscous liquid or mucus foam, it can cause clinical symptoms including abdominal distension, bloating, and pressure-related pain. The primary pharmacological approach involves the use of surfactants like simethicone, which target the gas-liquid interface to reduce surface tension (PubChem). This reduction in tension allows small, dispersed bubbles to coalesce into larger gas pockets, which are then more readily expelled via natural physiological processes such as eructation or flatus. Beyond symptomatic relief, targeting these interfaces is essential in diagnostic medicine to clear foam and improve the clarity of the mucosal surface during endoscopic examinations (Sudarshan et al., 2021).
