Overview

Gas bubbles in tissues refer to the formation and growth of gas-filled cavities within biological tissues. These bubbles form when dissolved gases come out of solution due to pressure changes or energy inputs. The dynamics of gas bubbles in tissues involve complex interactions of gas solubility, partial pressures, concentration gradients, diffusion, and bubble mechanics[3]. Bubbles can form when tissues become supersaturated with gas, meaning the combined partial pressures of dissolved gases exceeds the total ambient pressure on the tissue[3]. Once formed, bubbles may grow if supersaturation continues, potentially distorting surrounding tissues, causing cellular damage, creating pressure on nerves resulting in pain, or blocking blood vessels leading to hypoxia in affected tissues[3]. Bubble growth is influenced by multiple factors including ascent rate (in decompression contexts), tissue diffusivity, initial concentration difference between the gas and surrounding tissue, surface tension, and void fraction[6]. In medical contexts, gas bubbles can be induced by combined optical and ultrasound energies ("optrasound") for precise bubble control[1]. The presence of gas bubbles is particularly relevant in contexts such as decompression sickness, ultrasound-induced tissue damage (especially in gas-rich environments like lungs), and medical applications where controlled bubble formation may be therapeutically useful[2][3].
