Gas-filled microbubbles are contrast agents used in ultrasound imaging to enhance the reflection of ultrasound waves. They consist of a gas core encapsulated by a stabilizing shell. When exposed to an ultrasound field, the microbubble oscillates, producing strong echoes that enhance image contrast. Some advanced applications include targeted molecular imaging and therapeutic uses like focused drug/gene delivery.
Resonant oscillation under ultrasound exposure leads to enhanced backscatter and reflection of ultrasound waves, creating a high contrast compared to native tissues. Targeted versions bind to specific biomarkers.
