The gastric acid pool and gastric contents refer to the complex mixture of hydrochloric acid, water, electrolytes, and digestive enzymes like pepsin found within the stomach lumen. This environment is physiologically essential for the denaturation of dietary proteins, the conversion of pepsinogen to its active form, and the destruction of ingested pathogens (StatPearls, NBK526049).
