The gastric and intestinal mucosal surface is a multi-layered biological barrier that protects the gastrointestinal tract from its own acidic environment and external pathogens. It consists of the epithelial cell layer, a protective mucus-bicarbonate layer, and a rich vascular supply that facilitates rapid repair (StatPearls, 2023). This surface serves as a critical interface for nutrient absorption while maintaining a defense against pepsin and hydrochloric acid. In pharmacology, it is targeted by cytoprotective drugs like sucralfate and bismuth subsalicylate, which are used to treat peptic ulcers and gastritis (DrugBank, 2024). These medications often work by forming a physical barrier over damaged areas or by stimulating the production of endogenous protective factors like prostaglandins (PubMed, 2021). Dysfunction of this mucosal surface is a primary driver of diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Therapeutic intervention aims to restore the integrity of this barrier to promote healing and prevent systemic complications.
