Overview
The gastric antrum smooth muscle is a specialized type of smooth muscle located in the antrum, the lower portion of the stomach. Its primary function is to generate rhythmic contractions that mix ingested food with digestive enzymes and stomach acid, and to propel this mixture (chyme) through the pyloric sphincter into the small intestine at a controlled rate for optimal nutrient absorption. Regulation is modulated by factors such as Mfge8 and its receptor α8β1 integrin.
