Gastric content volume refers to the total amount of liquid, food, and secretions present in the stomach at any given time. The volume is dynamically regulated by the rate of gastric filling, the rate of gastric emptying, and the stomach's ability to accommodate ingested material by relaxing the fundic and proximal gastric smooth muscle[1][5][9]. Factors affecting gastric content volume include meal size, composition, gastric motility, hormone and neural inputs, and adaptive responses such as gastric accommodation. While it is a key physiological parameter, it is not a molecular, cellular, or pharmacological target but rather an important endpoint in studies of gastrointestinal function, motility disorders, and nutritional physiology[1][5][9]. Gastric content volume is a measurement/physiological variable and not a canonical drug target. It is useful in studies and clinical monitoring of gastric motility and accommodation but is not itself a molecule, receptor, or protein, and thus should not be structured as such for pharmacological databases.
