Overview

Gastric contents refer to the mixture of substances present within the stomach during digestion. This mixture, commonly called chyme, is composed of water, hydrochloric acid (HCl), electrolytes, mucus, enzymes (pepsins/pepsinogen), and proteins. It plays a crucial role in solubilizing and digesting food particles, converting solid food into a semiliquid mass, activating digestive enzymes, and killing ingested pathogens. While not a therapeutic target in itself, manipulating its composition and secretion is the basis for treating various gastrointestinal disorders.
