Gastric Contractility

Molecular classification
Physiological Process
01

Overview

Gastric contractility refers to the coordinated contractions of the stomach's smooth muscle layers, essential for mixing, grinding, and propelling ingested food through the stomach and into the small intestine. This process is a key component of gastric motility and is regulated by the enteric nervous system, hormones like ghrelin and CCK, and other factors. Dysregulation of gastric contractility can lead to disorders like gastroparesis or dumping syndrome.

02

Mechanism of action

Gastric contractility is a complex physiological process influenced by various neurohormonal factors and drugs that modulate smooth muscle activity in the stomach. Mechanisms targeting this process include: stimulation of motility via ghrelin receptors; inhibition of gastric emptying through CCK receptors; direct or indirect stimulation of smooth muscle contractions using prokinetics, and slowing of motility with anticholinergics or opioids.
