Overview

Gastric distension describes the abnormal enlargement or stretching of the stomach due to increased intragastric volume from gas, fluids, food retention, or obstruction. It can be acute—such as from blockage at the pylorus or duodenum—or chronic as seen with motility disorders. Gastric distension plays an important role in regulating appetite by sending signals via vagal afferents that contribute to feelings of fullness and satiety. In pathological contexts such as gastroparesis or bowel obstruction, excessive gastric expansion can lead to complications including ischemia and even perforation if left untreated. In functional gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome or functional dyspepsia, hypersensitivity to normal levels of gastric stretch may cause significant discomfort without overt anatomical abnormality. Management depends on addressing underlying causes—ranging from decompression with nasogastric tubes in emergencies to neuromodulatory medications targeting altered sensory processing when no structural cause is found. In summary: "Gastric distension" should not be considered a canonical drug target but rather a clinical sign/symptom resulting from various pathophysiological processes affecting the stomach.
