Overview

The gastric epithelial cell membrane is a complex lipid bilayer that serves as the primary interface between the gastric lumen and the underlying mucosal tissue (StatPearls, 2023). It plays a vital role in the gastric mucosal barrier, utilizing tight junctions and a coating of mucus and bicarbonate to withstand the highly acidic environment of the stomach (NIH, 2022). This structure is not a single molecular target but rather a cellular compartment containing various receptors, such as the H2 receptor, and structural proteins (PubChem, 2023). Pharmacological intervention at this level often involves cytoprotective agents like sucralfate, which polymerizes on the membrane surface to protect ulcerated tissue from acid and pepsin (FDA, 2021). Additionally, the membrane is the site of attachment for Helicobacter pylori, a major pathogen linked to chronic gastritis and gastric cancer (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2020). The integrity of these membranes is maintained by prostaglandins, which stimulate mucus and bicarbonate secretion while maintaining mucosal blood flow (StatPearls, 2023). Damage to these membranes by NSAIDs or alcohol can lead to erosive gastritis and peptic ulceration (Mayo Clinic, 2023).
