Gastric hydrochloric acid (HCl) is the primary acidic component of gastric juice, produced by parietal cells in the stomach lining. It plays a central role in digestion and host defense within the gastrointestinal tract. HCl denatures proteins, activates pepsinogen to pepsin for protein breakdown, kills ingested bacteria, and facilitates absorption of certain nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, and calcium. Imbalances in HCl production can lead to conditions like GERD, ulcers, hypochlorhydria, or achlorhydria. Its secretion is regulated by neural and hormonal factors.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) block H+/K+ ATPase activity, reducing acid secretion. Antacids neutralize gastric acid. H2-receptor antagonists block histamine-stimulated acid secretion.
