HCl

Overview

Gastric luminal hydrochloric acid is a primary constituent of gastric secretions, produced by the parietal cells of the stomach mucosa (StatPearls, NBK537005). It plays a fundamental role in the digestive process by denaturing proteins and providing the acidic environment necessary for the conversion of pepsinogen to the active protease pepsin (StatPearls, NBK537005). Beyond digestion, the low pH of gastric acid serves as a vital defense mechanism against ingested microorganisms, preventing intestinal colonization by pathogens (StatPearls, NBK537005). In clinical conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease, the presence of acid in the esophagus or its contact with damaged gastric mucosa leads to symptoms like heartburn and complications like ulceration (StatPearls, NBK526049). While systemic drugs often target the secretion machinery, such as the proton pump, this target is directly addressed by antacids, which neutralize the acid chemically to alleviate symptoms and protect the mucosal lining (StatPearls, NBK526049). The therapeutic goal of targeting luminal acid is typically to raise the pH above 4.0 to promote healing and reduce pain.
