Overview

Gastric mucins are a diverse set of large, heavily glycosylated glycoproteins forming the major structural and functional component of the stomach's mucus barrier. They are synthesized and secreted chiefly by surface epithelial and glandular cells in the stomach and constitute the protective layer that shields the epithelium from gastric acid, proteolytic enzymes, and microbial invasion. The main gastric mucins are MUC5AC (gel-forming, from surface mucous cells) and MUC6 (from gland mucous cells), both characterized by an extended, highly O-glycosylated protein backbone. Altered expression or glycosylation of gastric mucins is associated with diseases such as gastric cancer, *Helicobacter pylori* infection, and inflammatory conditions. While not a direct drug target, the functional integrity of gastric mucins is critical for gastric health and disease resistance[2][3][5].

Mechanism of action

Agents affecting mucin (indirect): Inhibition or stimulation of mucin synthesis or secretion (e.g., through anti-inflammatory or antisecretory mechanisms). Some research compounds (mucinase, glycosidase enzymes) can degrade or modify mucins for scientific purposes.
